UCA offers courses of Spanish as a foreign language at the initial, intermediate and advanced level, following the guidelines of the European frame for the teaching and learning of languages. These courses are intended to foster communicative ability in a meaningful socio-cultural setting.
When applying to study at UCA, non-native Spanish speaking students must present proof of their Spanish language level (any). Upon arrival at UCA, a compulsory Spanish placement test is administrated to all these students.

The test will determine whether or not they can understand university lectures in Spanish, read academic material with good comprehension and write good paragraphs in answer to questions about that material, complete Spanish sentences grammatically, and write acceptable short essays without using a dictionary.
Spanish courses in high school, college or university will not excuse students from taking the test. If a student already has a bachelor´s degree earned in residence from an accredited university in a Spanish-speaking country may request a waiver of the placement test.
The score obtained in placement test will determine each student´s standing level. Students who reach Advanced level may enroll full-time in university academic courses.
Students, who do not reach the “Advanced” level, are requested to combine Spanish language courses with regular modules during their exchange period. Exchange students can enroll in those courses paying a reduced fee and receive official transcripts for credit transfer purposes at their home institutions.

In most semesters, 80% of international students taking university courses are also taking Spanish classes at the same time. The typical student progresses one level each semester, but many students who have a good aptitude for language learning and study hard may skip levels.

There are two types of Spanish courses:
• Intensive (3 weeks long): 60 clock hours in daily sessions of 4 hours each. This course is offered in February and in July.
• Regular (16 week long): 60 clock hours in two sessions per week of 2 hours each. This course is offered in the first and second semester.

Students who arrive at UCA with low Spanish skills are especially encouraged to take the intensive pre-semester Spanish course, which is open for international students and local residents or professionals, combining language instruction with immersion and exposure to different cultural elements.
